Following recent moves by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to digitize its operations, its revenue has increased by some 178%.
This is according to the chief of staff at the office of the Vice President, Dr. Augustine Blay.
“By digitizing ECG operations and adopting cashless systems, we’ve successfully sealed the leaks and witnessed a remarkable revenue boost. In just a short time, revenue surged from GHC450 million to GHC1.25 billion—an incredible 178% increase”, Dr. Blay said in a LinkedIn post on June 10.
The ECG has recently embarked on a drive to digitize its operations, including the rollout of electronic payment options.
The company announced on May 15 that it is no longer accepting cash for the purchase of prepaid credits and payments of bills, noting that payments can only be done via mobile money or at the bank.
It also announced plans to digitalize its assets and customer data, including capturing customer IDs, telephone numbers, GPS codes, meter details, and the tags of ECG transformers, poles, and meters with unique QR codes.
In April 2023, the power supplier, led by its Managing Director, Ing. Samuel Dubik Mahama, embarked on an aggressive revenue collection drive that resulted in the recovery of monies from defaulting customers to the tune of over GH₵800 million. The operation also led to the identification and arrest of illegal power users.
