The Economic Fighters League (EFL), a pressure group, has commended the Trades Union Congress (TUC) for introducing a “workers manifesto” that highlights social and economic issues as they affect workers.
In a release on November 11, 2023, EFL described the document as a welcome development as far as the rights and interests of women are concerned and praised the leadership of TUC for the initiative.
“We view this as a welcome development, as the TUC has a long tradition of standing up for the rights and interests of workers.”
“We appreciate Dr. Baah’s insights, urging action on escalating poverty, national debt concerns, and proposing strategies for revenue enhancement and government expenditure reduction,” EFL’s release read in part.
The group also urged TUC to see the input of civil society as an important stakeholder in the rights of workers.
“We encourage the TUC to involve civil society in this initiative, recognising their significant role in the broader workers’ movement.”
EFL also advised the worker union to give “due consideration to the necessity of proportional representation at the parliamentary level”, as according to EFL, this will strengthen accountability in governance while simultaneously increasing political representation in decision-making processes.
The 5-point worker manifesto brings to the fore key social, economic, labour, energy, power, and governance matters.
Since the unveiling of the workers manifesto, the TUC has begun engagements with the major political parties in Ghana. Last week, the leadership of the TUC interacted with NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.
