Election 2024: I have no ambition of becoming Bawumia’s running mate—Opoku Onyinah

A former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, has dispelled any linkage from a recent social media post to his intention of joining Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a running mate.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah, who is also the chairman of the board of trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana, explained that the said post was in connection with an extract from an old publication that he decided to put out because his page had been inactive for a while.

“Last night, I was looking for a quote that touched my heart and decided to post it. As I could not find it and stumbled on this, I posted it. It has nothing to do with what is going on,” he clarified.

“Perhaps it has come at the wrong time. Timing is important. I still “keep my head” and place Christ first in whatever I do, he added.

In the earlier controversial post, the revered man of God said:

“The Lord has a reason for creating me. Burying my talent and making it redundant is doing a disservice to my family, church, nation, and world. If I fail to speak, to work, or to contribute, I allow the ‘bad’ minority to rule and dictate. Often, the silence of the majority, or a good one, helps the noisy minority destroy society or even rule. (From my script on Words of Wisdom)”

But this post was misconstrued by a lot of people, particularly critics of the ruling government, slamming the revered man of God for deciding to join the political bandwagon.

The misconception was also fuelled by Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annor-Dompreh, who made an X post acclaiming Dr. Bawumia and Apostle Prof. Onyinah as a suitable pair.

The statement by Apostle Prof. Onyinah rules him out of the list of persons who have been mentioned to fill the NPP’s vice presidential position for the December elections.

Energy Minister and Manhyia North MP Matthew Opoku- Prempeh, Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe Yaw Osei-Adutwum, and Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu have also been revealed as likely candidates to partner Dr. Bawumia.
