Election 2024: Mahama’s campaign spokesperson downplays calls for presidential debate

Spokesperson for John Mahama’s Campaign, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has talked down requests for a debate between her boss, Mr. John Mahama, and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Moments after Mr. Mahama had hosted his media interaction on Sunday, July 7, 2024, calls became rife on social media by some supporters of the two leading parties for a debate between the two candidates.

Speaking on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle on Monday, July 8, Bawa Mogtari said she doesn’t see the need for a debate because the current dire state of the economy makes Dr. Bawumia no match for Mr. Mahama.

“I personally have no appetite for a debate. I think that we debate when we literally know that our issues are probably parallel. When I look at what we have, when I look at the current trajectory, when I look at the failings of this particular administration, I ask myself, Why do we need to put up with a debate?

She, however, was quick to add that “this is a decision that the upper class usually makes.”

“It’s not my decision to make; as the debates and conversations go along, maybe eventually some conversations will happen around it, and of course, who knows?” she added.

Bawa Mogtari further expressed confidence that her flagbearer will win should a debate be organised between him and Dr. Bawumia, touting his experience and knowledge.

“We do know all about the debates between John Mahama and then-candidate Akufo-Addo, and we know who won those debates. So, I believe that the fact that Mr. Mahama is a man whose energy and knowledge are unparallel is not in doubt. And I’m sure on any day, whomever, I know he’s going to win the debate.”
