The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has granted bail to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The bail was set at GH¢50 million, with two sureties yet to be verified.

Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, told reporters that his client was questioned by EOCO over allegations of causing financial loss to the state.

He explained that the bail is part of an ongoing police inquiry, permitting Wontumi’s temporary release while investigations proceed.

The bail followed several hours of interrogation at EOCO’s Accra headquarters last Tuesday, during which Mr. Boasiako reportedly became unwell. Appiah Kubi added that his client is cooperating with the authorities to satisfy the bail conditions.

Meanwhile, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has offered to stand as a surety for Chairman Wontumi amid efforts by his legal team to meet the GH¢50 million bail bond requirements.

Lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi expressed confidence in meeting the conditions, which include providing two sureties by the end of the day.

More details to follow.
