A former parliamentary aspirant of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, is at the centre of a serious criminal investigation in the United States after he was arrested for allegedly stabbing his wife during a domestic dispute.
The incident occurred over the weekend in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, where Mr. Nortey, 41, who resides in Harrisburg, is accused of attacking his wife at their residence in Lower Paxton Township. Police say the alleged stabbing took place along Mayfair Drive at about 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17.
According to Lower Paxton Township Police, first responders who arrived at the scene found the woman injured and rushed her to hospital for treatment. Authorities have confirmed that she is currently in stable condition.
Following investigations, Mr. Nortey has been charged with attempted homicide, possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. Police noted that while the incident was severe, it posed no threat to the general public.
Online court records indicate that Mr. Nortey was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Judy and subsequently remanded into custody at the Dauphin County Prison after bail was denied. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 26.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that the family of Gilda Nortey, the victim and wife of the suspect, is demanding justice through the courts and may be considering divorce proceedings in the aftermath of the incident.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as more details surrounding the case are expected to emerge in the coming days.
