The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix following what it described as serious lapses in production standards at the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited plant.
In a statement issued in Accra on August 3, 2025, the FDA said the suspension takes immediate effect and is accompanied by a recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, as well as specific batches of the product sold in 380 g and 1.05 kg pouches.
According to the regulator, the decision followed consumer complaints and a subsequent inspection of the factory, which revealed poor maintenance of critical manufacturing equipment and inadequate monitoring systems to protect public health.
The FDA said the lapses compromised the sealing of canned products, creating conditions for contamination. In the pouches, bloating and the presence of mould were observed, raising what the Authority described as “serious health and safety concerns.”
“Any dereliction of duty identified will be swiftly dealt with in order to strengthen the FDA’s regulatory oversight,” the statement read, adding that an internal investigation is underway to determine whether there were regulatory failings, especially given that Nutrifoods had already been barred from manufacturing the product in January this year.
The FDA has urged consumers, retailers, and wholesalers to heed the recall directive and discontinue the sale or use of affected products.
“We will continue to exercise rigorous oversight in accordance with our mandate to protect public health and safety,” the Authority assured.
