Lead convenor at Fixing the Country Movement, Ernest Owusu Bempah, says that his group has received approval from the police to picket at ex-President John Mahama’s office on November 16.
The purpose of the protest, he stated, is to demand answers from Mr. Mahama about his involvement in the so-called Airbus scandal and why authorities have shown disinterest in the matter.
Addressing the media at the Ghana International Press Centre on Thursday, October 12, 2023, he described the Airbus case as the “biggest scandal” ever to rock the country, alleging a series of actors across several countries, including the former president.
He called on the country’s justice systems to relaunch investigations into the alleged scandal, adding that although both the former and current Special Prosecutors have publicly acknowledged the case as under investigation, not much has been heard on its present status.
“The former special prosecutor, Martin A. B. K. Amidu, who had found the Airbus corruption credible enough to open an investigation into it in February 2020, announced that he had summoned some suspects… Indeed, the current special prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has made a public statement that he is investigating the matter. It has been over a year since he indicated that he was investigating the matter,” Owusu Bempah stated.
“In light of the above, we deem it prudent that we engage in public manifestations and picketing to bring to the attention of whoever may be concerned about the immediate action taken on the Mahama Airbus corruption affair”, he added.
Owusu Bempah, who is also a deputy communications director of the NPP, said he believed the NDC flagbearer was deeply involved in the alleged scandal based on court documents in the US and UK that they had sighted.
He further said that they will continue to put pressure on the relevant authorities if their protest at the former president’s office does not yield the necessary result.
The picketing will start from the OSP through to the frontage of the office of the former president, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, according to him.
He also slammed sections of NDC youth who threatened their movement that they would confront them should they protest at Mr. Mahama’s office.
