The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has renewed its warning against the unauthorised use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements by the public.
In a press statement issued on Monday, GAF expressed concern over the appearance of military-style attire during recent demonstrations and by individuals providing security for certain public figures.
GAF noted similar illegal practices among those involved in illegal mining activities and some political groups.
“During the recent demonstrations in Accra and Kumasi, it was observed that some protestors and individuals claiming to provide private security to dignitaries were dressed in military-pattern camouflage uniforms and other military-style gear. Similar instances were noted during anti-galamsey operations conducted by GAF.”
The statement emphasized that these actions create a false impression that such individuals are part of the Armed Forces, thereby tarnishing GAF’s reputation.
GAF also pointed out that the unauthorised use of military attire violates the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967 and poses serious public safety risks by facilitating impersonation and enabling criminal activities.
“It is essential to highlight that these unauthorised acts contravene the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which remains in effect. Moreover, the misuse of military attire can facilitate impersonation and enable criminal activities, posing a serious threat to public safety.”
Given the security risks posed by these illegal acts, GAF announced that it would take “decisive actions,” including the arrest of offenders, to ensure they face legal consequences.
The Armed Forces also called on the public to report any suspicious activities involving unauthorised military attire.
