The Ghana Football Association has apologised to Ghanaians for the Black Stars’ lackluster performance at the ongoing 2023 edition of the African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
The apology comes days after the Black Stars exited the group stage of the competition, securing just two (2) points.
A statement released by the Association on Tuesday read: “The Ghana Football Association extends our sincerest apologies to the good people of Ghana and all stakeholders for the recent disappointing performance of the senior national team, the Black Stars, at the Africa Cup of Nations Cote D’Ivoire 2023.”
“We understand the disappointment and frustration that such results can bring to our passionate football-loving nation. Our team’s performance fell short of the high expectations we all share, and we take full responsibility for the disappointment”, the statement furthered.
The Association revealed that plans are in place to thoroughly address pertinent issues, including the team’s strategies, training, compensation, and overall structure.
The GFA thanked Ghanaians for their support and expressed its commitment to restoring the fortunes of the senior national football team.
Meanwhile, calls for the dissolution and restructuring of the team and its management persist.
Earlier, the citizenry bashed the government and the Association for purportedly requesting some $8.5 million as budget for the 2023 AFCON.
Presently, the GFA is looking to replace coach Chris Hughton, who was axed from the team after the Black Stars failed to progress in the competition, a decision sports analysts have criticised as rash and superficial.
