The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced that the Ghana Card will become a mandatory requirement for the purchase and renewal of all motor insurance policies across the country, effective January 1, 2026.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the Commission said the directive applies to both individual motorists and corporate entities as part of broader efforts to strengthen compliance, reduce fraud, and modernise Ghana’s insurance sector. Under the new rules, corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when conducting motor insurance transactions.
According to the NIC, the policy is aimed at improving claims handling processes, enhancing Know-Your-Customer and Anti-Money Laundering compliance, and aligning Ghana’s insurance industry with global best practices.
“The mandatory use of the Ghana Card for motor insurance transactions is a critical step toward sanitising the insurance space and ensuring greater transparency and accountability,” the Commissioner of Insurance (acting), Dr. Abiba Zakariah, said in the notice.
“This initiative will significantly reduce fraudulent activities and improve the efficiency of claims processing for the benefit of all stakeholders,” the notice added.
The Commission urged all motorists to ensure they have their Ghana Card readily available when visiting insurance sales points, warning that transactions may not be processed without the required identification once the policy takes effect.
