The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two cases of Mpox in the Accra Metropolitan Area, prompting swift action to contain the virus and prevent further spread.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the GHS stated that it is working closely with the Ministry of Health to implement rigorous public health measures.
These include immediate contact tracing, enhanced surveillance in health facilities and communities, and intensified public education campaigns.
Mpox, a viral disease transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials, presents symptoms such as fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, headache, and muscle pain. The Health Service emphasized that although the situation is being closely monitored, there is no cause for widespread panic.
“Our public health system remains vigilant,” the statement said. “Protocols for detection, management, and control of infectious diseases are being rigorously followed.”
Health officials have begun tracing and monitoring all individuals who may have been exposed to the two confirmed cases, providing them with necessary care and guidance. The public is being urged to maintain good hygiene, avoid contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms, and promptly report suspected cases to nearby health facilities.
The Ghana Health Service and Ministry of Health reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding public health, assuring citizens that the country has the capacity and expertise to manage the situation effectively.
