The National Communications Authority (NCA) has opened up about concerns on social media over the high price of internet data.
On Sunday, July 20, the hashtag #DissolveNCABoard trended on various social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), with some Ghanaians demanding a significant reduction in the price of data, among other issues, including the declaration of MTN as a significant market player, which has led to soaring rates of airtime.
Acknowledging the concerns in a press statement, the Authority noted that Ghana is among the countries with the cheapest cost of internet data both in West Africa and Africa, citing a report from cable.co.uk.
“Data from a report published by cable.co.uk and reviewed by the Authority as part of its Regular Billings Monitoring exercise ranked Ghana 3rd in Africa as the country with the cheapest cost pricing for mobile internet data and the second in West Africa,” the statement said.
The Authority, however, revealed no plans to review the price downward but rather indicated that “the NCA wished to inform consumers that it would continue to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure reliable internet access.”
