On Sunday, January 8, 2023, American musician Robert Rihmeek Williams, better known by his stage name Meek Mill, came under fire on social media after posting a video of his visit to the Jubilee House with his music playing in the background.
Some individuals viewed the video, which quickly gained popularity, as insulting and a violation of presidential procedure.
He published a music video he shot at the Jubilee House during his visit to the nation over the Christmas holiday on Sunday night.
The performer and his crew also strolled through a few Jubilee House conference rooms as well as the building’s exterior grounds while dishing out portions of his rap lines.
Many Ghanaians, including political figures such as North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, took to social media to register their angst about the incident.
“All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately.
How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively?
“Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high-security installation?”
The Presidency is yet to officially respond to the outbursts, although some communicators and sympathizers of the government have argued that the visit and video at the Presidency are part of the government’s “Beyond the Return” initiative aimed at promoting tourism.
Meanwhile, following public backlash, Meek Mill has tweeted an apology to the Presidency and all who felt offended by his video, citing differences in background. He, however, expressed interest in continuing to work with his African counterparts.
“To the people of Ghana, no video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana… The fastest way to make a connection is through music, and I wanted to do that with displaying art. I’m in my 30s and from America, and I didn’t know much about the lifestyle here.”
Meek Mill added: “My apologies to the people if there was any disrespect! We’re still going to push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa… What I’m trying to do is more than a video, which you should see coming soon! “My apologies to the office also!”
