The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reassured the public that it is actively monitoring the global surge in acute respiratory infections, particularly those caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), which has been reported in China and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
In a press release dated January 17, 2025, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of GHS, emphasized that the virus is not new and that Ghana remains vigilant despite no unusual respiratory pathogens being detected locally.
“Weekly samples from respiratory surveillance sites across all 16 regions have not shown any unusual respiratory pathogens, including hMPV,” the release stated.
However, GHS is taking proactive measures to ensure early detection and response to any potential surge. These measures include enhanced surveillance, expanded laboratory testing capabilities, public sensitisation, and regular assessments aligned with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations.
Human Metapneumovirus, a known cause of common colds, can lead to symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Common signs include cough, fever, sore throat, and runny nose, while severe cases may involve difficulty breathing, chest pain, and persistent fever.
“Those most at risk of severe illness include individuals with underlying conditions such as asthma, immunosuppressed persons, and the elderly above 65 years,” Dr. Kuma-Aboagye explained.
The GHS outlined preventive measures similar to those for other respiratory infections, urging the public to practice good respiratory etiquette, maintain proper hand hygiene, avoid touching their face, and wear facemasks when necessary.
“Early reporting to health facilities when symptoms develop is crucial,” Dr. Kuma-Aboagye advised, highlighting the importance of a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables to bolster immunity.
The WHO’s January 7 risk assessment described the current increase in acute respiratory infections in the Northern Hemisphere as seasonal and not unusual. However, GHS remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding public health.
“We wish to assure the public that all necessary steps are being taken to protect the health of Ghanaians, and we will continue to provide regular updates on the situation,” the statement concluded.
As global respiratory infections dominate headlines, Ghana’s vigilant response serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and public cooperation in maintaining health security.
