The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has announced that its members will not participate in the nationwide strike action declared by Organised Labour in protest against illegal mining (galamsey).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour expressed the association’s support for the anti-galamsey cause but emphasised that all GMA members are expected to continue providing full services at health facilities across the country.
“The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has not declared a roadmap for an industrial action.”
“Therefore, all members are expected to continue providing full services without interruptions.”
“The GMA is in solidarity with Organised Labour in this fight against Galamsey.”
“The National Executive Council (NEC) will give further information when necessary,” read GMA’s statement.
Organised Labour has scheduled the nationwide strike for October 10, 2024, to pressure the government into taking decisive action against illegal mining. Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, October 7, 2024, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah reiterated that unless the government declares a state of emergency and takes more stringent measures, the strike will proceed as planned.
“We have concluded that our strike remains unchanged. We believe the government’s proposals do not sufficiently address our demands, and therefore, our notice of strike stands.”
