The Government of Ghana has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing him as a distinguished traditional ruler whose leadership fostered peace, reconciliation and development in the kingdom.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, the Presidency said President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the government, extended his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the entire nation following the death of the revered monarch.

“The Government of Ghana has received with profound sadness the news of the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II,” the statement said.

It added that President Mahama conveyed his sympathies “to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of immense grief.”

The government paid tribute to the late Yaa Naa’s role in restoring peace and stability to Dagbon, noting that his reign marked a significant period of healing following years of conflict.

“His Majesty will be remembered as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation, and lasting peace to Dagbon following years of conflict,” the statement said.

According to the Presidency, the late King’s commitment to unity, stability and the welfare of his people helped create an environment conducive to development while strengthening collaboration between traditional authorities and the government.

“His unwavering commitment to unity, stability, and the welfare of his people created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the enduring partnership between the traditional authorities and the Government in advancing progress across Dagbon and Ghana,” it stated.

The government further honoured the late monarch’s contributions to national development, describing his service as invaluable and his leadership as an enduring source of inspiration.

“The Government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his invaluable service to the nation. May his wisdom, leadership, and dedication to peace continue to inspire future generations,” the statement added.
