The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced plans to revoke the licences of fifty large-scale mining companies found to have breached regulatory requirements, as part of ongoing efforts to reform Ghana’s mining sector.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the Ministry said the decision follows a “rigorous review of large-scale mining operations,” which is currently being conducted by a special committee established for that purpose.
According to the Ministry, the move is aimed at strengthening oversight and enforcing compliance across the sector. The review is examining whether mining companies are operating in line with established laws, protocols and approved procedures.
The statement noted that, “the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources wishes to inform relevant stakeholders that it is set to revoke the licences of fifty (50) large-scale mining companies, over various regulatory breaches.”
It further explained that the review process was initiated at the direction of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and that the committee is expected to present its findings soon.
“At the behest of the Minister, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the committee shall announce the final list of the affected companies in due course,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry stressed that the impending revocations form part of the government’s broader agenda to clean up the mining industry and promote sustainable practices.
“This move forms part of the government’s commitment to sanitise the mining sector, in line with its vision of upholding safe and responsible mining,” the statement said.
It added that the ongoing review is also intended to ensure that “mining at all levels is done with recourse to appropriate protocols and due procedures,” reinforcing the state’s resolve to protect the environment and safeguard public interest.
