Effective immediately, Court of Appeal in four regional capitals can no longer hold sitting sessions, the Judicial Service has disclosed.
In an official statement from the office of the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, dated February 8, the affected regional capitals are Ho, Koforidua, Cape Coast, and Tamale.
The statement further announced that all appeals from the Northern Sector of the nation, including the Upper East, Upper West, North East, Northern, Savannah, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, and Ashanti areas, will be heard in Kumasi.
On the other hand, all appeals in the southern sector, which includes the Western, Central, Eastern, Oti, Volta, and Greater Accra Regions, would be handled in Accra.
All appeals that are still ongoing at the Court of Appeal listed above have been sent accordingly to Kumasi and Accra.
It is unclear what motivated the Judicial Service’s decision.
The Court of Appeal is the second highest Court in the hierarchy of the Superior Courts. Judges who sit in the Court of Appeal are referred to as Justices of the Court of Appeal.
As the name suggests, all appeal cases from the High Courts, Regional Tribunals and Civil appeals from Circuit Courts are brought to the Court of Appeal.
