Two prominent figures in the NPP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, have officially announced their intentions to contest in the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 2026.
The declarations came on the same day the NPP opened nominations for the flagbearer race. Both men, who previously contested in the party’s 2023 presidential primaries, are seeking another shot at leading the governing party.
In a statement, Ken Agyapong said,
“What brings me the greatest joy is the overwhelming love and support pouring in from every corner of the country. It’s not just from within our party butacross age groups and sectors—youngpeople, professionals,, and even Members of Parliament. Many have reached out, offering to personally cover the cost of my nomination forms.”
“This is not just my journey; it is our collective mission. Together, we will rise above partisanship, unite across regions, and build a Ghana where every citizen, young or old, rich or poor, has a fair shot at success. I am ready to listen to you and to lead with integrity and purpose. Let us move forward together.”
Meanwhile, Kwabena Agyepong, a former general secretary of the NPP and presidential spokesperson under the Kufuor administration, also confirmed his bid shortly after filing his intent. He emphasized the need for a values-driven leadership model rooted in service, humility, and competence.
“Politics belongs to the grassroots, belongs to the ordinary people. Not the petty scramblee of contented partisan elites. Let us not weigh down this party any further with a choice that will eventually call for unending efforts of reconciliation and reparation from hate speeches,. he said.
“With me, KAA, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory. We need a pair of clean hands, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart to lead our nation and the party. I, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, stand ready to work with you, ready to rebuild, ready to restore hope for our party and every Ghanaian,” he added.
The two candidates join what is expected to be a competitive race, expected to feature former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua on Tuesday announced that the party had officially opened nominations for presidential aspirants.
The nomination window will close on August 28, 2025, with the flagbearer expected to be elected early next year.
