Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has died, leaving the nation’s music and Christian communities in mourning.
The veteran artist passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical treatment, according to close family sources.
His passing was confirmed by friends in the creative industry, including renowned sound engineer Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredyma, who shared the news on social media (Facebook).
Yaw Sarpong was a pioneer of contemporary Ghanaian gospel music, widely revered for his role as the long-time leader of the Asomafo Gospel Band.
Over a career spanning decades, he recorded over 25 albums and more than 100 songs, blending traditional Ghanaian rhythms with powerful Christian messages. His hit songs, including “Wo Haw Ne Sen,” “Awurade Kasa,” and “Oko Yi,” remain staples in churches across the country and continue to inspire worshippers.
His contribution to gospel music earned him immense respect within the Christian community and the wider music industry.
Many younger gospel artistes cite him as a major influence, acknowledging the role his music played in shaping their careers. He also received major accolades during his lifetime, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, cementing his legacy as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel musicians.
The news of Yaw Sarpong’s death comes barely a month after the passing of Maame Tiwa, a key member of the Asomafo group, further deepening the sorrow in Ghana’s gospel music fraternity.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from fans, colleagues, and admirers, with many remembering him as a musical ambassador whose work will be celebrated for generations.
