President John Dramani Mahama has appointed renowned journalist and media personality Bridget Otoo as a Staffer at the Office of the President. The announcement was made by the presidency on Friday, June 27.
Before her appointment, Otoo worked with Metro TV and operated as a freelance journalist. She is widely recognised for her dynamic presence in Ghana’s media landscape and for her outspoken views on key social and political issues. Over the years, she has earned a strong following for her commentary—often critical of the previous NPP administration—and her consistent use of both traditional and digital platforms to advocate for national reform.
Otoo has also played an active role in civic protests, with one of the most prominent being her involvement in the Occupy Julorbi House demonstrations in Accra on September 21, 2023. The protest sought to amplify calls for accountability and governance reform.
In a public statement shared on social media, Otoo expressed appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the administration’s communication efforts, describing the role as a responsibility she intends to approach with commitment and integrity.
“This appointment to serve at the Seat of Government as a ‘Presidential Staffer, Government Communications’, although earned on my part through grit, dedication and hard work, is still an incredible privilege that I intend to prove myself worthy of,” she wrote.
She also shared personal reflections on the day of the President’s inauguration, revealing that she was unexpectedly hospitalised after what was meant to be a routine health check. Despite the setback, she stayed engaged through live updates from her husband, Van, and his cousin Richard, who attended the ceremony.
“I awoke like most Ghanaians, jittery with anticipation… but fate, it seemed, had other plans,” she recalled. “My silver lining, however, was that I could experience it vicariously through my husband and his cousin giving me live detailed updates that would rival the best news channels.”
Otoo extended gratitude to President Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama for their support during her recovery, as well as to key members of the government including Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Xoese Dogbe, and Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Fosu.
“To the NDC grassroots supporters and foot soldiers… and to all others, too numerous to name who have made this journey easier, more hopeful and ultimately worth it — thank you,” she added.
