President John Dramani Mahama has formally requested an immediate investigation into the deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
In a letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, the President expressed his determination to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
“These incidents, which occurred in various parts of the country, have left a lasting scar on our democratic process, and it is imperative that justice is served for the victims and their families,” the letter stated.
To ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation, President Mahama has proposed the establishment of a dedicated investigative task force within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to focus exclusively on the cases.
The task force is expected to collaborate with eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other individuals who may provide critical information.
The President also called for a thorough review of security arrangements at the affected polling stations to examine the role of deployed personnel.
Additionally, he urged the use of forensic techniques to analyse physical evidence, such as bullet casings and weaponry, to uncover the truth behind the tragic incidents.
“Investigate the role and actions of security personnel deployed at the affected polling stations to determine their involvement or oversight,” the President directed, adding that the use of advanced forensic methods is essential to obtaining conclusive evidence.
The letter further highlighted the importance of engaging the Electoral Commission and other civic bodies to review reports from the 2020 and 2024 elections, providing context to the investigations.
To maintain public trust, the President has requested periodic updates on the progress of the investigations, assuring the police of his administration’s full support.
“We are confident in the competence and professionalism of the Criminal Investigations Department and trust that your efforts will yield the necessary results to bring justice to the victims and their families while preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process,” the letter concluded.
