President-elect John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to nominate The Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

This decision, made in consultation with key party leaders, reflects Mahama’s confidence in Bagbin’s extensive parliamentary experience and leadership.

“Rt. Hon. Bagbin has distinguished himself in the service of Parliament, rising from Member of Parliament for Nadowli to Minority and Majority Leader, respectively, and subsequently as Speaker of the 8th Parliament,” the President-elect noted.

Mr. Mahama emphasised that Bagbin’s track record and wealth of experience make him the ideal candidate to guide Parliament through this pivotal moment in Ghana’s democratic journey.

The president-elect further expressed strong belief that under Bagbin’s leadership, Parliament will be further empowered to fulfil its legislative and oversight responsibilities.

“I am convinced that under the stewardship of the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin, Ghana’s Parliament will be further strengthened to deliver effectively on its oversight responsibility,” Mahama stated.

The announcement was made in an official statement on Sunday, January 5, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, special aide to the president-elect.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bagbin has expressed deep gratitude to the president-elect for his decision to nominate him as Speaker of the Ninth Parliament.

“This is both a profound privilege and an onerous responsibility. A responsibility that I do not take lightly,” he said, acknowledging the confidence placed in him by the President-elect in consultation with the National Executives and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Bagbin described himself as humbled by Mahama’s faith in his leadership as the country embarks on a new chapter in its democratic journey.

Reflecting on his years of parliamentary service, the Speaker also reaffirmed his commitment to the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.

He pledged to uphold the values of integrity, transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness.

“I will continue to uphold these values and ensure that the Ninth Parliament operates with the highest standards,” he said.

In addition, he assured the President-elect and the people of Ghana of his dedication to strengthening democratic institutions and making Parliament more responsive to national needs.

“I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead, working to strengthen our democratic institutions,” Mr. Bagbin said.
