The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced the passing of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the revered Queen Mother of the Ashanti Kingdom.

She was 98.

The announcement was made in Kumasi, with the Asantehene expressing deep sorrow at the loss of a leader who played a pivotal role in the cultural and traditional life of the Asante people. Nana Konadu Yiadom III, mother of the Asantehene, was celebrated for her wisdom, dedication, and guidance to the Asante Nation throughout her reign.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be made public. However, traditional sources indicate that the Manhyia Palace will observe a period of mourning, with flags expected to fly at half-mast and ceremonial activities adjusted in line with Ashanti customs.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III ascended to the position of Asantehemaa in 2017, succeeding Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

Her tenure was marked by her advocacy for unity among the Asante people, the promotion of women’s roles in chieftaincy, and her support for preserving Ashanti heritage.

The Queen Mother holds a significant position within the Asante Kingdom, serving as a trusted advisor to the Asantehene and a custodian of tradition. Her passing is expected to draw mourners from across Ghana and the diaspora.

The Manhyia Palace is expected to release further information on funeral rites in the coming days.
