The Ghana Police Service has approved Tuesday, July 30, as the date when the Minority Caucus can organise their planned demonstration against the governors and board of the Bank of Ghana.
The police, in a letter dated July 17 to the convener of the demonstration, Mahama Ayariga, asked the protestors to abide by the terms of the demonstration.
“Your protest will be held on 30/07/2024”
“The route of your protest shall be from Obra Spot-Adabraka Farisco-Ridge Roundabout National Theatre Traffic Light-High Court Complex, then branch to Atta Mills Highway and terminate at the Kwame Nkrumah Museum.”
“You shall select ten (10) protestors who will present the petition to the authorities,” the letter said.
The police further directed the protestors to take steps to ensure there is no breach of public peace and conduct themselves in a peaceful manner during and after the protest.
Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, accused Dr. Ernest Addison and his deputies of mismanaging the Central Bank, running down the economy, failing to curtail inflation, and implementing proper monetary policy.
He also alleged procurement breaches in the construction of a US$250 million office complex for the BOG.
Members of the Minority staged a protest in October 2023, demanding the resignation of the governor and his deputies for supervising the BOG’s GH¢60.81 billion loss in the fiscal year 2022 and allocating over $250 million for the construction of a new headquarters.
Also, attempts by the Caucus to present their petition to Governor Ernest Addison and his two deputies were unsuccessful, as the Head of Security received it on their behalf, citing the governors’ unavailability.
The BOG leadership, however, had maintained that it had done no wrong and that their actions were necessary to prevent the economy from collapsing.
