Ghana’s digital payment ecosystem continued its steady expansion in August 2025, with mobile money transactions reaching GH¢354.1 billion, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest economic and financial data.

The figure, though slightly down from GH¢355.4 billion in July, reflects resilience in the sector, which has emerged as the backbone of financial inclusion.

The number of active mobile money accounts rose to 25.1 million, up from 24.4 million in July, while registered accounts climbed to 77.7 million, underscoring the growing reliance on digital wallets.

“Mobile money remains the most widely used financial service, and the data shows increasing trust in the system,” the central bank report observed.

In terms of volume, mobile money transactions hit 831 million in August, compared to 778 million in July, marking a sharp rebound after a mid-year slowdown. The value of transactions under the interoperability framework also climbed to GH¢4.9 billion, the highest so far this year, with transaction volumes crossing 26.4 million.

Cheque usage continued to wane, with transaction values dipping to GH¢33 billion, down from GH¢37.4 billion in July, highlighting a shift away from traditional banking instruments.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) Instant Pay platform maintained momentum, processing 17.6 million transactions worth GH¢58.9 billion, slightly lower than July’s GH¢61.4 billion.

Internet banking transactions also expanded, with values hitting GH¢30 billion in August, supported by 4.7 million transactions—the highest monthly volume so far this year.
