The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has petitioned the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA) to intervene in what it describes as persistent harassment and extortion of its members by the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at Tesano.
The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana represents hundreds of riders engaged in delivery and courier services across the country.
In a letter dated October 27, 2025, and signed by the Union’s General Secretary, Mr Timothy Agengri Abugri, the group said its members continue to face “incessant harassment, intimidation, and extortion” despite their efforts to operate within the law.
According to the petition, “Some of our members are being arbitrarily arrested and detained, and their motorcycles impounded without due process.” The Union expressed concern that such actions have disrupted delivery services relied upon by many Ghanaians and undermined the livelihoods of thousands of young riders who depend on courier services for income.
Describing the situation as “unfair and unjustified”, the MCUG appealed to the NYA to use its “good offices to call for an immediate cessation of the harassment of motorcycle couriers by the police.”
The Union also proposed that a committee be established to investigate the ongoing issues between motorcycle riders and the MTTD at Tesano. The proposed committee, it said, should include representatives from the union, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a “fair and transparent investigation”.
Furthermore, the petition called for the findings and recommendations of such a committee to be implemented swiftly to “prevent future occurrences and foster a better working relationship between motorcycle couriers and the police.”
“We believe that your office is well-positioned to facilitate a resolution to this matter and ensure that the rights of our members are protected,” the petition concluded.
