The National Media Commission (NMC) has given Power FM up to Saturday, November 11, to render an unqualified apology to the 2nd lady, H.E. Samira Bawumia, over remarks made on their platform that were considered insulting and had the potential to cause ethnic tensions.
In a letter addressed to the station on Monday, November 6, 2023, the NMC rebuked the station’s use of gender-based insults against the person of the Second Lady.
The Commission also deemed the said remarks insulting to the Fulani Community and had the potential to trigger ethnic tensions.
“On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, you allowed your station, Power FM, to be used as the medium for a gender-based insult on H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia in a perverted and debased broadcast that also sought to denigrate the entire Fulani Community in Ghana and incite ethnic tension. Such behaviour has no place in our search for national cohesion, peace, and development”, part of the letter read.
“Your presenter’s phoney protestation was unprofessional and deceitfully calculated to egg the commentator on. Instead of being a moderator, your presenter became a cheerleader for obscenity,” the letter added.
The NMC demanded that the Osu-based station apologise to the 2nd lady, the Fulani community, and Ghanaians in general, giving them a 5-day ultimatum.
