NPA moves to address fuel shortages in Northern Ghana

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has assured the public of swift action to resolve petrol shortages reported in parts of northern Ghana.

The announcement follows a meeting by the Technical Committee on Energy, convened by the Chief of Staff on January 10, 2025, to address the issue.

In a press release signed by its Corporate Affairs Directorate, the NPA identified a logistical challenge as the cause of the shortages but emphasized that a three-pronged strategy is being implemented to resolve the situation immediately.

As part of the measures, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have been granted special permission to load petrol from the Bulk Energy Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) depot in Kumasi and transport it to retail outlets in the five northern regions. Additionally, OMCs can now load extra petrol from Tema depots to supplement supplies from Kumasi.

Furthermore, arrangements are being made in collaboration with BOST to transfer nine million litres of petrol currently in the pipeline between the Buipe and Bolgatanga depots into storage in Bolgatanga.

This stock will be distributed to retail outlets in the affected regions.

“These solutions are being implemented concurrently to ensure immediate relief. We encourage the public to go about their normal business and avoid panic buying,” the NPA stated.

The Authority reassured Ghanaians that the country has adequate fuel stocks and additional supplies are being discharged into the system.
