Following the decision of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko to withdraw from the NPP’s presidential contest, the party has annulled the planned run-off and affirmed Francis Addai-Nimoh as the fifth candidate for its main presidential election on November 4.
Agyarko and Addai-Nimoh tied in the Special Electoral College elections on August 26, necessitating a run-off.
A decision by the National Council of the party to amend guidelines that allowed for the run-off on September 2 did not sit well with Mr. Agyarko, who in a statement announced his withdrawal from the run-off.
In a statement on August 31, the Chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee, Rt. Rev. Prof. Mike Aaron Ocquaye, confirmed Mr. Addai-Nimoh as the fifth candidate.
According to the chairman, the committee had taken notice of Agyarko’s decision to withdraw from the contest and, therefore, the run-off election scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, would no longer be held.
The elections on November 4, which would result in the final selection of a flagbearer for the party to contest the December 2024 elections, will thus feature Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Owusu Afriye Akoto, Alan Kyerematen, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
