All four candidates vying for the presidential ticket of the governing NPP have signed an undertaking to accept the outcome of Saturday’s primaries and not quit the party.
At a meeting of the National Council and other senior members of the party on Thursday, November 2, 2023, General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodu described the party’s interaction with the four candidates as very successful.
He announced that the aspirants, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh, have each resolved to make peace and remain in the party regardless of the outcome of the elections.
“We were able to get the four aspirants contesting, namely Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, H.E. Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Akoto Afriyie, and Hon. Addai-Nimoh, all signing an undertaking. In summary, what they signed to was to accept the primary election results, to promote peace and cohesion; in the event that they don’t win, they will not resign from the party; to support the winner of the primaries; to ensure and enforce mechanisms that have been established by the party; and to work within the timeline and regulations of the party from now until the results are declared.”
According to him, there was a need for the party to hold the “family meeting” in the spirit of camaraderie and an acknowledgement of the fact that Saturday’s elections are only an internal contest.
Aside from that, lawyer Frimpong Kodua stated that the meeting was to solicit any final concerns of the aspirants and address them prior to the elections.
Over 200,000 delegates are expected to vote in the elections on Saturday at various centres across the 16 regions.
The elections are expected to be a two-way race between Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia.
The NPP suffered a shock when a leading member, who was also a flagbearer aspirant, Alan Kyerematen, resigned after the first round of the presidential elections.
