The National Executive Committee and National Council of the NPP will later Thursday, July 4, meet over the nomination by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate for the upcoming general elections.
In an earlier statement on Monday, July 1, signed by General Secretary Justina Frimpong Kodua, the party called for an emergency meeting of the two key decision-making bodies in the ruling party.
Although the purpose of the meeting was not disclosed, reports gathered by The Sikaman Times indicate an affirmation will be made on the vice presidential candidature of the Energy Minister.
Earlier, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the company of some officials, visited the NPP Headquarters to formally present the nomination of Dr. Opoku Prempeh to the party’s national officers, confirming prior rumours of the latter’s selection.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that Dr. Bawumia had a crucial meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo on June 25 to discuss his choice of Dr. Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh has been rebuked by critics within and outside his party for his high-minded disposition, although others believe his choice was strategic, citing his ability to garner votes for the NPP in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region.
