The New Patriotic Party has announced it will challenge in court the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, calling the move “unlawful” and “disingenuous.”
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, described the EC’s sudden directive as a clear violation of a prior High Court ruling that instructed the Commission to complete the collation of results, not conduct a fresh election.
“The New Patriotic Party finds the Electoral Commission’s sudden U-turn on the Ablekuma North stalemate not only shocking but also disingenuous and unlawful,” Kodua stated. “We completely reject the Commission’s decision to rerun the polling station elections in the said 19 polling stations.”
The party cited a January 4, 2025, High Court ruling, which ordered the EC to complete the collation of parliamentary results in four constituencies—Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South. The order also instructed the Inspector General of Police to provide adequate security for the process. According to the NPP, the EC had complied with the order in all constituencies except Ablekuma North.
“In the specific case of Ablekuma North, the court ordered the EC to complete the collation of results from 62 polling stations. As at January 8, the EC had successfully collated results from 59 out of the 62 outstanding polling stations,” Kodua added.
The NPP also accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating disruptions to the collation process. “On many occasions, thugs believed to be aligned with the NDC stormed the collation center to prevent the EC from completing its constitutional duties,” Kodua alleged, referencing a January 2025 EC press statement that blamed NDC supporters for damaging its property and threatening staff.
“The NDC knows that they lost the election. We in the NPP shall stop at nothing to ensure that the democratic will of the people of Ablekuma North is upheld,” Kodua claimed.
Kodua disclosed that the NPP’s legal directorate had been instructed to file a suit to challenge the EC’s decision in court in the coming days.
“We have caused our legal directorate to challenge the directive in court. We shall file in court and challenge the whimsical, capricious directive by the EC.”
