The New Patriotic Party on Saturday has begun its nationwide internal election to select its flagbearer for the 2028 presidential contest, a vote widely seen as pivotal to redefining the party’s political direction after its loss in the 2024 general elections.
More than 211,000 accredited delegates are expected to cast their ballots at over 300 polling centres across the country, choosing from five aspirants: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
The election has drawn heightened national attention, not only because of the calibre of contenders involved, but also due to its implications for party unity and renewal ahead of the 2028 polls.
Party leaders have appealed to delegates to conduct themselves responsibly and accept the outcome in the interest of cohesion.
Results from the nationwide exercise are expected to set the tone for the NPP’s reorganisation and electoral strategy in the lead-up to 2028.
