The Nurses and Midwives Training College Tamale management, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service, has embarked on a fire safety prevention and protection program.
Dr. Abdul-Malik Abdulai, principal of the Nurses and Midwives Training College in Tamale, revealed that this is a yearly activity on which the institution embarks in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service to educate and sensitize the students, staff, and residents on and off campus on the prevention and protection of fire safety.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says it is currently embarking on a public education program aimed at preventing and controlling fire outbreaks within the Harmattan season.
The decision comes on the heels of a seeming surge in fire outbreaks in various institutions across the country recently.
Speaking to the media, Stephen Asante, Sub-station Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital of the Ghana National Fire Service, stated that the education exercise is primarily aimed at educational institutions.
This campaign formed part of the yearly activities of the Nurses and Midwives Training College Tamale with the GNFS towards educating students, staff, and residents on and off campus on the occurrence of fires to create a safe environment for themselves and their families.
Sub-station Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital and Ghana National Fire Service, Stephen Asante, added that fire outbreaks increased when there was no education on how to prevent and protect against unforeseen fire breaks.
The fire officers also staged a performance on firefighting and proceeded with demonstrations on how to use various safety equipment, such as blankets and extinguishers, to douse fires.
They explained the concepts of fire safety to the students and underscored the essence of ensuring that all electrical gadgets were handled with care and optimum procedures were observed during cooking at home.
He indicated that public education programs were critical and therefore expressed the determination of the GNFS to continually educate the public to help reduce the menace, especially in homes and public places.
Additionally, the public was urged to implement and adhere to fire safety education since fire safety was a shared responsibility.
Maamu Dorcas, a student, expressed her gratitude to the school management and the GNFS team for the education program, which has helped her tremendously on how to prevent and protect against unforeseen fire situations.
