A violent confrontation involving students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School has cast a shadow over this year’s inter-school athletics competition in Agona Swedru, prompting a police investigation and the suspension of sporting activities across the Central Region.
The incident occurred during the District Schools Athletics Games, where what began as a routine sporting event descended into chaos following clashes between rival students. Eyewitness accounts and widely circulated videos show a student from Obrachire being attacked with sticks and stones amid heightened tensions at the venue.
The injured student sustained facial injuries, including a broken tooth, and was rushed to a health facility for treatment. The victim has since called for justice, insisting the assault was unprovoked.
The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. Officers have vowed to identify and prosecute all students found culpable in the violence.
In a swift development, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) reportedly directed the headmaster of Swedru School of Business to produce students suspected to have participated in the assault, warning of further action should there be non-compliance.
The violence has also drawn a strong response from the Ghana Education Service (GES). The Central Regional Directorate announced the immediate suspension of all inter-school sports competitions in the region pending a review of safety arrangements.
GES officials described the development as deeply troubling, stressing that school sporting events are meant to promote discipline, teamwork and unity — not hostility and lawlessness. The Directorate has instructed school authorities to halt all scheduled competitions until stricter preventive and supervisory measures are implemented.
The incident has reignited concerns and conversations about growing indiscipline and student hooliganism in some senior high schools across the country.
