The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has backtracked on its earlier position on the candidature of Mr Zakaria Abdulai in the Juaben Constituency, directing him to step aside to allow for an unhindered investigation into allegations against him.
In a press release dated October 20, 2026, the party said its Functional Executive Committee (FEC) had reconsidered the matter and decided that Mr Abdulai should step aside in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability.
The latest decision comes a day after the party issued an earlier statement on the matter on October 19, 2026.
“After further consideration, FEC has directed that Mr Zakaria Abdulai step aside, in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability, to allow for an unhindered investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said.
The party, however, stressed that the directive should not be interpreted as a determination of the merits of the allegations against Mr Abdulai.
It maintained that he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence and expressed confidence that the police would conduct a thorough, fair and expeditious investigation.
“The Party trusts that the CID will conduct a thorough, fair and expeditious investigation, and will be guided by its outcome,” the statement added.
The NDC has consequently directed the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee to take note of the decision and act accordingly.
