The Ghana Medical Association has once again added their voice to the fight against illegal mining, popularly referred to as galamsey, stating that the activity signifies a bleak future for the country.
The association bemoaned the blatant disregard by galamsey operators and other stakeholders, despite several press statements it has issued on the adverse effects of “galamsey” on the health of Ghanaians.
In another press statement on Thursday, the association lamented why several health warnings from their quarters appear to have fallen on deaf ears, with unscrupulous individuals and organisations still engaging in the activity.
“Despite these reminders, the destruction of our lands and water bodies continues unabated and the situation is getting worse by the day, which portends a bleak future for our country.”
The Association believes that traditional leaders and political actors are behind Galamsey activities, urging all and sundry to now name and shame them in the interest of the country’s future.
“The GMA urges all Ghanaians to expose these individuals and organisations involved in the destruction of land and water bodies without fear of favour. The security agencies should treat these individuals as criminals by arresting and prosecuting them swiftly, “the association charged.
It also called for sustained pressure from civil society, the media, and Ghanaians on traditional and political leaders to end galamsey activities.
