The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2025 results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, revealing mixed performance across the four core subjects, with Mathematics recording the sharpest decline in pass rates over the past year.
Data published by WAEC indicate that performance in English Language remained relatively stable, with 69 percent of candidates obtaining credits (A1–C6) in 2025, compared with 69.52 percent in 2024 and a peak of 73.11 percent in 2023. Although slightly lower than last year, English maintained its position as one of the better-performing core subjects.
Mathematics, however, recorded a significant drop. Only 48.73 percent of candidates achieved a credit pass in 2025, down from 66.86 percent in 2024 and 62.23 percent in 2023. In real numbers, 114,872 candidates failed mathematics outright, marking it as the weakest-performing subject this year.
Integrated Science also showed a marginal decline, with 57.74 percent securing credit passes, compared to 58.77 percent in 2024 and 66.82 percent in 2023. A total of 61,243 candidates failed the subject in 2025, reflecting growing concerns about science education outcomes.
Social Studies, which has traditionally been one of the strongest subjects, also declined noticeably. Credit passes fell to 55.82 percent from 71.53 percent in 2024, while over 122,000 candidates failed.
