Four field officers of Bills Micro-Credit Limited have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service following a widely circulated video showing a confrontation between the officers and a woman carrying a baby during a loan recovery operation at Ashongman Estate in Accra.
The officers were apprehended by the Kwabenya District Police Command on Sunday, March 15, 2026, after the footage sparked public outrage and renewed debate over the methods used by some microfinance institutions to recover debts.
In a statement issued by the Accra Regional Police Public Affairs Unit and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the police said the complainant, 42-year-old Hagar Emaser, reported the incident on March 13. She alleged that four men who identified themselves as officials of Bills Micro-Credit had visited her residence to demand repayment of a loan and subsequently assaulted her.
The suspects have been identified as Denis Wornyo, 38; Albert Amarh, 40; Ebenezer Amartei, 23; and Atsu Lawson, 27. Police say the four are currently in custody assisting with investigations after providing caution statements to investigators.
The video that has circulated widely on social media shows the officers engaged in a heated exchange with the woman over an alleged failure to repay a GH¢300 loan. In the footage, one of the officers appears to seize the woman’s mobile phone. As she attempts to retrieve it while holding her baby, she loses her balance and falls to the ground.
The incident has drawn strong criticism from sections of the public and civil society groups, with many questioning the conduct of loan recovery agents and calling for stricter oversight within the microfinance sector.
Meanwhile, management of Bills Micro-Credit Limited acknowledged the video and described the situation as deeply concerning.
“Management of Bills Micro-Credit Limited has taken note of a video circulating on social media showing an altercation between some Bills field officers and a woman who was carrying a child,” the company said in a statement.
“From the video currently in circulation, the woman appears to have attempted to retrieve a mobile phone from one of the officers while holding a baby, during which she unfortunately fell. The situation is deeply regrettable, and management has immediately initiated a full internal investigation to establish the complete facts surrounding the incident.”
The company emphasised that it operates as a regulated financial institution and adheres to strict professional and ethical standards.
In a subsequent update, the company announced disciplinary action against the officers involved and confirmed that they had been handed over to the police for investigation.
“Upon the directive of the Board, the officers involved in the incident have been immediately suspended by the company pending the outcome of investigations. In addition, the officers have been handed over to the Ghana Police Service to assist with independent investigations into the matter,” the statement said.
The company further disclosed that its Board had reached out to the affected customer and would continue engaging her as investigations proceed.
Nonetheless, police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
