The Ghana Police Service has successfully foiled an attempted robbery targeting a gold consignment worth over GHC1.3 million, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest of three suspects.
Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, announced the breakthrough at a press briefing on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the CID Headquarters in Accra.
She disclosed that the Special Support Unit (SSU) of the Police acted on intelligence indicating a plan to rob a gold dealer, Mr. Rashid, during a scheduled delivery on June 26.
Investigations revealed that the gold dealer’s own driver and a man posing as his bodyguard were among the conspirators. “The suspects had conspired about a month ago, waiting for an opportune time to execute their plan,” DCOP Donkor stated.
According to the CID, the robbers initially planned to strike along the Koforidua-Nsawam route but altered the plan to the Koforidua-Aburi road. Officers from the Police tracked their movements and intercepted the suspects near Akuapem-Manfe.
Two suspects, Adams Zibo and Massawud Yussif, were seen in an unregistered Hyundai vehicle, while another, Kenneth Khartey, was found trailing the gold consignment on a motorbike. Police moved in swiftly and arrested Khartey at the scene, rescuing both the target and his driver.
The consignment, estimated to weigh 1.2 kilograms and valued at GHC1,350,343.53, was recovered. Zibo and Yussif were later apprehended at East Legon.
Further investigations revealed that logistics for the robbery—including a vehicle, motorbikes, and funds for procuring weapons—had been arranged by Zibo and Yussif. One suspect, Addu Gyawu, who was initially linked to the operation, was cleared and granted bail.
“The three remaining suspects have been detained to assist with further investigations and will be arraigned before court,” the CID Director-General added.
DCOP Donkor commended the officers involved, saying, “On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, I wish to commend all our officers who took part in this operation for their vigilance and dedication.”
The Police Service reiterated its commitment to protecting life and property, urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement efforts.
