The Ghana Police Service has warned that it will strictly enforce a High Court order prohibiting a planned demonstration against illegal mining scheduled for Friday, February 27.
The “Stop Galamsey” protest was set to take place in the capital, but the Accra Regional Police Command successfully sought an injunction to stop the gathering.
The police cited concerns regarding public safety and the fact that the demonstration would coincide with the State of the Nation Address.
The police also moved to clarify claims by organizers on social media who suggested they had not been officially served with the court documents.
“The Police wish to clarify that the Court Order has been properly served in accordance with due process,” the statement read, adding that “the Police remain open to engaging the conveners to agree on a mutually convenient date for the demonstration.”
The police have urged the public to comply with the order and avoid any actions that could lead to a breach of the peace, while maintaining that they remain committed to “upholding constitutional rights while ensuring public safety and law and order.”
