Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) has won the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) championship, securing an unprecedented ninth title after a dramatic comeback against debut finalists Accra Academy and St. Augustine’s College.
The Blue Magicians overcame a sluggish start to finish at the top of the grand finale held on Thursday night at the University of Ghana’s Premier Domes, scoring 40 points to claim the coveted national crown.
Accra Academy, making its first appearance in the NSMQ grand finale, placed second with 33 points, while St. Augustine’s College finished third with 27 points.
PRESEC-Legon’s victory appeared uncertain in the early stages of the contest, with the school managing only nine points in the opening round.
However, the team gradually regained momentum and delivered a decisive performance in the Problem of the Day round, scoring four points while both Accra Academy and St. Augustine’s College drew blanks.
The turnaround provided PRESEC-Legon with the impetus to mount a strong challenge in the remaining rounds as the contest entered its decisive stages.
The final segment, featuring the competition’s riddles, proved crucial to the outcome. PRESEC-Legon correctly answered two of the four riddles to secure the points needed to seal the championship, ending Accra Academy’s hopes of completing a historic maiden title victory.
The victory marks PRESEC-Legon’s ninth NSMQ championship, further strengthening its position as the most successful school in the history of the competition.
For Accra Academy, the second-place finish represents a major milestone despite the seven-point gap separating the school from the eventual winners.
The Bleoo boys reached the grand finale for the first time after progressing through the competition against 172 other schools nationwide, establishing themselves among the country’s leading science and mathematics teams.
Although the final result ended in disappointment for Accra Academy, its historic run highlighted the school’s competitive strength and marked a significant achievement in its NSMQ journey.
St. Augustine’s College completed the top three with 27 points.
