His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has presented some 1,500 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service to help improve upon the organization’s service delivery.
He stated that special teams have been trained and positioned in areas needed to check and fight crimes in and around the country.
He said the trained police officers have been deployed to all the 18 police regions in the country, hence the need to provide them with the requisite equipment to help improve service delivery to the people of the country.
The president also disclosed that, given the strides made in recent years, there was a need to further empower the Ghana Police Service. According to him, the government approved the hiring of 5,000 new security officers last year, of whom 3,000 have successfully completed their training and the remaining 2,000 are still in the process.
“Last year, the government gave approval to the police to recruit five thousand officers. Three thousand of those recruited have passed out, with the remaining still under training, ” he stated.
He said the new recruits are the first batch of men and women to benefit from the Modified Police Training Officers curriculum, which is focused on equipping the officers with skills in addition to what they already know.
He tasked the officers to put the bikes to good use and directed them to use them in areas where they were needed most.
He said they should share it equitably and ensure their own safety as well as that of other road users.
The brief ceremony took place at the forecourt of the headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Accra.
Upon receiving the motorbikes, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, thanked the President and pledged to put them to good use.
