The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has confirmed that one of its officers has died and another is receiving treatment after they were attacked by unknown assailants in the Tempani District of the Upper East Region.

The officers, Assistant Immigration Control Officer (AICO I) Philip Lartey and AICO I Cosmos Dakurah, were returning from duty on a motorbike when they were ambushed and shot at Nangani around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Service on Monday, the two sustained gunshot wounds and were initially treated at the Basonde Clinic before being transferred to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. However, AICO I Cosmos Dakurah later passed away in the early hours of Monday, November 3.

“The Service confirms the attack on two Immigration Officers who were shot at Nangani, in Tempani District in the Upper East Region, on their return from duty,” the statement said. “Regrettably, AICO I Cosmos Dakurah later succumbed to his injuries and passed away.”

The Ghana Immigration Service says it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to investigate the circumstances leading to the attack. A high-level team has been dispatched to the region to support ongoing investigations and provide morale support to officers.

“The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) have deployed a team from the National Headquarters to the Upper East Region to support investigations and reassure officers following the loss of a colleague,” the GIS noted.

The Service expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen officer.

“The CGI and Management offer their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and friends of the fallen officer during this challenging time,” the release stated.

The statement strongly condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and an affront to national security efforts.

“The GIS commends the bravery and dedication of its officers and vehemently condemns, in the strongest terms, any act of violence directed against its personnel, who serve with dedication to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity,” it said.

The Service pledged full collaboration with security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.
