The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress has associated itself with last week’s strike by the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG).
It has accordingly initiated a strike action, attributing it mainly to delays in Tier 2 contribution remittance and the stoppage of agreed allowances.
“It is noteworthy that the demands for Tier 2 pension payment and the restoration of payment of stopped agreed allowances were among the myriad of issues listed on the petitions to the National Labour Commission (NLC) in October 2023, which almost led to another joint non-teaching staff union strike in the public universities.”
“It is obvious that the patience of the university workers has waned, and the continued lethargy of government agencies in addressing labour issues will no longer be entertained.”
“TEWU of TUC (GH) is calling on its members in the public universities to join the ongoing strike in solidarity and especially on the non-payment of Tier 2 pension contributions by the government that have been outstanding for nine (9) months,” TEWU said in a statement on January 22, 2024.
It called on the government to immediately pay the nine-month arrears for Tier 2 contributions in order to ensure “dignified” treatment of workers at public universities and prevent disruptions to the academic calendar.
