Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin of fostering disorder in the House by allegedly allowing “lawlessness” from National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs.
His comments follow an incident on Thursday, November 7, 2024, when NDC MPs occupied seats typically reserved for the Majority side.
At a press conference, Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed disappointment in Speaker Bagbin’s approach, describing it as a “non-reconciliatory posture.” He stated,
“The Speaker supervised chaos… Clearly, the NDC is on a war path; they want confusion and lawlessness in this country, and all these are being supervised by Mr. Speaker.”
He also accused Speaker Bagbin of “setting the country on fire,” adding that the Majority had hoped for a more diplomatic stance from him.
Tensions have escalated since Speaker Bagbin adjourned Parliament indefinitely on October 22 due to a lack of quorum. Despite the NPP Caucus’ initial request to reconvene urgently to address pressing government matters, the November 7 session proceeded without NPP MPs present, prompting another indefinite adjournment.
Meanwhile, Leader of the NDC Caucus, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has criticised the NPP Caucus for causing financial loss to the state by failing to attend Parliament despite initiating a recall just days after the initial adjournment.
