A statement from the leadership of three university unions, the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), and the Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), has indicated that the planned industrial action set for Friday, August 9, has been cancelled.
This move is in reaction to the government’s intervention, which involved providing its members with an upward increase of the vehicle maintenance allowance (VMA).
The joint statement from the unions expressed their gratitude for the government’s action, saying it is a step towards justice and equity.
“We are grateful to the government for addressing our concerns and restoring the VMA for our members,” said a spokesperson for the unions.
“This decision reflects a willingness to work with us to resolve outstanding issues and improve our working conditions,” read part of the statement.
The unions, however, urged the government to apply the VMA adjustment to all categories of senior staff at Ghanaian public universities without qualifying restrictions.
“We believe that all members of our esteemed association commute to work to perform their official duties for the collective advancement of public universities in Ghana.”
“It is only fair that all members benefit from this adjustment as everyone contributes to the advancement of public universities,” the statement added.
The unions further pledged their continued engagement with the government and other stakeholders, while committing to building a “better future” for public universities in Ghana.
