The Upper East Regional Security Council has closed down the Bolgatanga Technical Institute (BOTECH) following a riot over alleged examination malpractice on Monday.

Accordingly, students were given a couple of hours to vacate the school premises.

The Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council, Stephen Yakubu, in briefing the press, said the closure was the best solution for everyone.

He stated that “We are going to allow the final year students to come in only when they have a paper to write,” adding that the students were to blame for the inconveniences.

The Minister further warned the students they would be dealt with by security personnel if they did not pack out in time.

Hon. Yakubu also hinted that a committee would be set up to investigate the cause of the riot, including those who started it.

The students rioted following the arrest of two of their colleagues and a teacher for allegedly engaging in examination malpractice. Properties, including seven vehicles belonging to teachers, have been vandalised. The police personnel who were called in to respond to the rioting fired warning shots and tear gas to control the students.

Meanwhile, 3 students have been arrested by the police in connected with the riot.

This incident comes a few weeks after a similar one at the Islamic Senior High School in Abrepo in the Ashanti region, where students protested vehicle knockdowns in front of their school.
